Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

What is a doula, and what do they do?
A doula is a trained professional who provides physical, emotional, and informational support during pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period. Unlike medical professionals, doulas do not perform clinical tasks but instead focus on empowering you to have the birth experience you desire.

Why should I hire a doula?
Studies show that having a doula can lead to shorter labor, reduced need for interventions, and higher satisfaction with your birth experience. Doulas provide continuous support tailored to your needs, whether you're planning a natural birth, using an epidural, or scheduling a C-section.

Insurance & Payment

Does Dogwood Doula accept insurance?
Yes, we currently accept Wellcare, Healthy Blue and United Medicaid plans. Tricare Prime and Select Coverage are also accepted. Phyllis Herbe is currently a non-network provider.  Coverage depends on your specific plan, so we will work with you to confirm eligibility.

Are your services covered under Medicaid?
Yes, we currently accept Wellcare, Healthy Blue and United Medicaid plans. Medicaid often covers doula services at no cost to the client after coverage confirmation. If you’re eligible, we’ll guide you through the process of getting approval. Learn more about Medicaid doula benefits on our blog.

Do you offer payment plans or financing?
Yes! For clients paying out-of-pocket, we partner with payment services like Affirm and Klarna to make our services more accessible.

Pregnancy & Birth Support

Do you only support natural births?
Not at all! We support all birth preferences, including medicated, unmedicated, VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean), and C-sections. Our goal is to help you achieve a positive birth experience, no matter your plan!

What does labor support look like?
During labor, we provide hands-on comfort measures like massage, counterpressure, and position changes to support progress and reduce discomfort. We also help you advocate for your preferences and keep you informed every step of the way. We offer use of birth balls, peanut balls, TENS units and other birth tools. Generally we arrive at the hospital when active labor has begun.

Can you assist with breastfeeding after birth?
Absolutely! We provide initial breastfeeding support in the hospital or at home, including latching techniques, troubleshooting challenges, and creating a feeding plan. At our postpartum visit we will ensure a good latch has been achieved, offer support for engorgement, pumping or other issues that come up.

Postpartum Services

What kind of postpartum support do you provide?
Our postpartum services are currently limited to in-home visits that will cover breastfeeding, postpartum care and newborn care topics. We also have contracted with local postpartum doulas that can offer extended support overnight or during the day based on your needs. Please request this type of support early as it is booked up very quickly.

How long can I receive postpartum support?
Postpartum support can last anywhere from a few days to several weeks, depending on your needs. We’ll work together to develop a plan that fits your recovery and parenting goals.

Preparing for Your Doula Experience

When should I hire a doula?
The earlier, the better! Many clients hire us during their first or second trimester to maximize access to prenatal support, but we’re happy to help at any stage of pregnancy.

What should I bring to a prenatal meeting?
Bring your birth plan (if you have one), questions about labor and delivery, and any preferences or concerns you’d like to discuss. We’ll also review medical considerations and personal goals.

How do I prepare for a postpartum visit?
We recommend jotting down questions or concerns beforehand and letting us know areas where you’d like support, such as breastfeeding, newborn care, or emotional adjustment.
